How to Search Cases by Name
For a statewide name search, use Kansas CaseSearch. It replaced the old Kansas District Court Public Access Portal in 2025. The portal's own Smart Search instructions describe the basic flow. You register an account, enter a record number or name, and pass a reCAPTCHA check. Registration does not shut out the public. Anyone may use the service, provided they follow the portal's terms and access controls.
- Register or sign in as the current CaseSearch interface directs.
- Enter the full party name and complete the reCAPTCHA check.
- Open Advanced Filtering Options and set Location to Lane to avoid results from the other five counties in the 24th Judicial District.
- Choose Party Name, Business Name, Nickname, or Sounds Like only as the search requires; a business search needs the Business Name option.
- Review the case caption, court, case type, number, and events rather than relying on a name match alone.
A broad name search can pull in records that have nothing to do with your case. Use the file-date, case-status, case-type, and judicial-officer filters to narrow the results, and remember that a similar name alone does not prove identity.
| Field | Type | Required | Use |

Lane County CaseSearch After 2025
CaseSearch is the current public name for the system. That was not always so. Older official PDFs still speak of Smart Search and the Public Access Portal. Some also cite search.kscourts.gov or a prodportal address, leftovers from the migration period. Read those names as historical clues pointing to one system, not separate databases. The Kansas Judicial Branch also finished moving its sites to the .gov domain. That migration was complete in January 2025. The official CaseSearch landing screen posts the current terms and the working entry point.

That screen marks the true statewide starting point. It displays no party names and no private case identifiers.
How to Search by Case Number
Lane County case numbers changed format on September 12, 2022. The county joined Enterprise Justice Odyssey that day. Cases started earlier follow a year, case-type abbreviation, and six digits. The official guide shows this as 2022-CR-000001. A post-cutover number opens with a county abbreviation. Then comes a four-digit year, the type, and six digits. The guide offers no Lane-specific prefix example, so invent none. Its illustration is a Riley County number, RL-2019-CR-000001. Smart Search also accepts compact forms like 2019CV25 or RL2019CV25. If an older Lane case rejects a county prefix, retry the year/type/number form. Or run a party-name search with Location set to Lane.
Lane County's Four-Channel Search Plan
An empty screen online is not the end of the road. Lawful channels still stand open. Supreme Court Rule 22 requires a public terminal at every district court. In Lane County, that terminal sits with Lane County District Court. The address is 144 S. Lane, Dighton. Hours run 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. The terminal closes from noon to 1:00 p.m.
| Channel | Best use | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| CaseSearch | Public statewide case information and permitted records | Portal exclusions and migration gaps apply |
| Courthouse terminal | Public Lane records, including some converted documents | Cannot unlock sealed or nonpublic material |
| Clerk | Case identification, current setting, copy route | Current fees must be requested |
| KORA request | A specific document or defined date range | Access law, exemptions, and costs apply |
Before driving to Dighton, call the Lane County District Court Clerk at 620-397-2805. Mail goes to P.O. Box 188, Dighton, KS 67839. The published fax number is 620-397-5526. The Kansas Judicial Branch KORA court-record request form works too; name the case and document, and ask for the current copy or certification estimate.
What a Case Search Shows
A Lane County case lookup splits into two layers. Case information covers the identifying and status details, while a document link, where public, belongs to the record layer. A docket entry is not a certified copy. And a status label alone is never the final disposition.
| Case number | The court identifier, with format affected by the 2022 Odyssey cutover. |
|---|---|
| Case type | Criminal, civil, limited action, domestic, traffic, probate, or another category. |
| Parties and attorneys | Roles and representation when publicly displayed. |
| Judicial officer | The assigned or presiding judge or magistrate. |
| Status and file date | Portal labels that need context from later events and orders. |
| Events index | Dated filings, settings, orders, and dispositions available under Rule 22. |
| Documents | Public links, terminal-only converted files, or restricted items depending on access. |
Lane County Search Is Not eFlex
Kansas eFlex is the Judicial Branch's filing system. Authorized filers log in to submit court documents. Its login and worklist screens do not replace the public events index.

That filing screen draws the line clearly. Submitting a document is not the same as searching a public Lane County case. The Central Payment Center is a payment and citation lookup channel, not a full district-court docket, and Dighton's utility-payment page has nothing to do with court payments.
County vs Statewide Case Search
Kansas runs no Lane-only web database. CaseSearch is statewide by design. The Lane County clerk and the courthouse terminal supply the local, court-held channels, and the Location filter creates the county focus inside the statewide system. Dighton Municipal Court stays outside this district-court search unless a municipal matter later produces a district-court appeal record.
| Route | Scope | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Kansas CaseSearch | Public Kansas district-court cases | Name, number, status, events, permitted documents |
| Lane clerk and kiosk | Lane County District Court | Local confirmation and public terminal access |
| Dighton City Court | City ordinance and municipal traffic | Citation-based questions by phone at 620-397-5200 |
Federal cases live elsewhere. The CourtListener RECAP site sometimes offers a free-law copy of a federal filing. It is neither the official record nor a Lane County state-court search.

The interface itself marks the jurisdiction line. Kansas state cases start with CaseSearch, while official federal access runs through PACER and the federal courts.
When Lane County Search Is Empty
An empty Lane County result has several innocent explanations. The number format may be wrong. The Location filter may point elsewhere. The case may have begun in Dighton City Court, a pre-Odyssey document may sit on the terminal only, or Rule 22 may exclude that case or document. None of that proves the record never existed or that everything is sealed. Try the older case-number form first. Then run a careful name search, and ask the clerk about the public terminal.
Information but no document: Ask whether the item is a public converted record available at the courthouse kiosk or whether a specific KORA request is the correct route.
Kansas law sets a response deadline for records requests: action must come as soon as possible and no later than the end of the third business day. That clock is not a promise of copies within three days. Any delay or denial should carry an explanation.
Restricted Cases and Access Rules
Rule 22 keeps a long list of matters off the public portal. Adoption, care and treatment, child custody or support, child in need of care, divorce, expunged matters, grand-jury proceedings, guardianship, juvenile cases, parentage, and protection orders are all excluded. Certain documents are restricted too. Think presentence reports, poverty affidavits, trial exhibits, some family documents, and unexecuted warrants. A few public converted documents may be viewable only at a kiosk. Anything nonpublic stays closed, whether you search online or sit at the terminal. Don't try to work around a restriction. Don't expect a clerk to hand over a sealed file. Instead, ask what lawful access route exists, or which authority supports the denial. For documents and copies beyond a case summary, the full court record search process explains how to request them.
Lane County Case Lookup Terms
A Lane County result uses words that mark different layers of a file. Read them with care, since a setting, a status, or a filing can easily be mistaken for a judgment.
- Events index
- Rule 22's term for the chronological list of case events.
- Docket entry
- One dated filing, setting, order, or other event line.
- Case status
- A portal classification that requires context and is not itself a certified outcome.
- Judicial officer
- The assigned or presiding judge or district magistrate judge.
- Certified copy
- A clerk-authenticated document; ask the Lane clerk for the current price.
- Sealed or expunged
- A legal access status controlled by statute or order, not merely an empty web page.
