Getting Lane County Court Records
Civil, criminal, domestic, probate, juvenile, traffic, and magistrate cases all live in district court files. The Lane County District Court Clerk holds them. That office is not the county administrative clerk, which handles different work entirely. Before you ask, gather the court, the exact case number, and the document title. Add a rough filing date too. Then pick the narrowest channel that actually gets you what you need.
- Search Kansas CaseSearch for public case information and available document links.
- Use the public terminal at Lane County District Court when a public converted document is missing online.
- Call 620-397-2805 to confirm the file and current copy process.
- Visit the counter, mail P.O. Box 188, Dighton, KS 67839, or fax 620-397-5526.
- Submit the Kansas court-record request form and ask for a cost estimate.
Ask the clerk whether pickup, mail, email, or fax works best for your request. A portal image is fine for reading. It is not a certified copy.
Lane County KORA Request Fields
The records field on the official form works best with one named item, not a broad class. Name a single case file or document. For a case file, list Lane County District Court as custodian, not the county elections and administrative office.
| Field | What to provide | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Court | Lane County District Court | Routes the request |
| Contact | Name, address, phone, email | Supports estimates and delivery |
| Record | Case number, title, date | Identifies the filing |
| Delivery | Email, mail, pickup, fax | States a preferred route |
| Copy | Plain or certified | Prevents the wrong product |
A requester may ask the custodian which rule or statute supports a denial or a delay. Kansas law demands prompt action. Even so, a third-business-day reply may be an estimate or an explanation rather than the records themselves.
Lane County Court Record Types
Think of the docket as the navigation layer. The case file is the document layer underneath it. A Lane County court record may include a complaint or petition, an answer, motions, notices, affidavits, orders, judgments, transcript requests, appeal filings, and accessible exhibits or recordings. Public case information, kept separately, shows identity and status fields.
- Criminal complaints, motions, plea events, judgments, and sentencing orders
- Civil petitions, answers, service entries, motions, and judgments
- Public probate, domestic, and limited-action material subject to access rules
- Traffic case information and allowed filed documents
- Post-judgment motions, notices of appeal, and routing entries
Family, juvenile, adoption, protection-order, warrant, and mental-health material carries strict limits. A document missing from the web does not prove no filing exists.
Lane County Kiosk Document Gap
Kansas Judicial Branch guidance draws a line between the statewide portal and the courthouse terminal. Rule 22 makes each district court maintain a public terminal. Documents converted from pre-Odyssey systems may sit at that kiosk even when CaseSearch shows nothing.
Missing portal result: confirm the case number and court, then ask whether the Lane County terminal holds a public converted document.
The terminal is not a way around a seal; it is a second level of public access. Nonpublic records stay unavailable there. Some public records simply have a narrower channel.
Inside a Lane County Court Record
A Lane County court record holds far more than the brief event line a search returns. Read the header first. Then match each dated event to the filed paper behind it, whenever access permits.
| Case identity | County, case number, file date, type, status, and judicial officer |
|---|---|
| People | Parties, attorneys, and public appearance information |
| Pleadings | Petitions, complaints, answers, motions, notices, and affidavits |
| Events index | Dated filings, settings, continuances, rulings, and disposition |
| Orders | Signed judgments and other public decisions |
| Access | Web link, kiosk status, redaction, seal, or restriction |
Rule 22 names that chronological list the events index, and it may point to a document without replacing it. For a search by name or number, use the Lane County case lookup.
Lane County Email Images Since 2008
The 24th Judicial District local rules include an email-image route in Appendix 8A. It generally covers documents imaged from January 1, 2008, forward, and most eligible requests are described as handled within three business days. Confidential material goes only to authorized recipients. This channel fits when you already know the document. Give the Lane County case number, the filing name, a useful date, and an email address, then ask whether the image is a plain copy and whether certification needs another process. Asking for every case tied to one person is not a specific file request. Rule 22 says clerks need not compile bulk information.
Note: Older records may require terminal review or another clerk-approved copy method instead of email delivery.
Fees and Certified Copies
A plain copy just reproduces the file. A certified copy carries the clerk's own authentication. A transcript is prepared through a separate process, and a picture saved from a screen is none of these. Lane County's official sources publish no current amounts for page copies, certification, search time, faxing, or email images.
| Request | Published amount |
|---|---|
| Plain copy | Ask for a current estimate |
| Certified order or file | Ask which item needs certification |
| Search or staff time | Custodian may estimate charges |
| Transcript and one copy | Requester pays the transcription provider |

Ask for an estimate before any work starts. Say whether certification should cover one order or the full Lane County file.
Lane County Transcript Requests
A transcript is a written record of a hearing, not a printout of docket entries. Local Rule 306 and Appendix 3B govern the request. It must state the hearing, whether a complete or partial transcript is wanted. Add any special instructions. A judge signs it. The requester pays for the transcript plus one copy, and the original is filed with the clerk.
- Complete transcript
- The full requested proceeding.
- Partial transcript
- Only the specified portion.
- Digital recording
- A court-held recording reviewed with consent; an allowed CD is not the official record.
Ask the Lane County clerk how to identify the reporter or transcriptionist. Keep a transcript order separate from any vague copy request.
Sealed Records and Public Access
Public access rests on Kansas Supreme Court Rule 22 and the Kansas Open Records Act. Court orders also play a part. A public case and events index may show up through CaseSearch. The courthouse terminal offers it too. Still, the web portal does not carry every public document. Adoption, expunged, juvenile, certain family, guardianship, protection, grand-jury, and care-and-treatment categories face broad exclusions.
Key access rules:
Kansas Supreme Court Rule 22 defines portal, terminal, and inaccessible categories.
K.S.A. 45-218 covers inspection, response, and fees.
K.S.A. 45-221 supplies the exemption framework.
A blank search does not make a Lane County case sealed. The cause may be another court, a migration limit, a document restriction, or a true nonpublic status. The custodian can name the lawful route or the withholding authority.
Lane County and Federal Files
Some Lane County residents land in federal court, and those cases never touch CaseSearch. Federal trials run through the U.S. District Court for Kansas, its CM/ECF filing system, and PACER. Bankruptcy sits in its own court. Federal appeals climb to the Tenth Circuit.
Read the caption before anything else. Check the jurisdiction and the case-number family too. Dighton municipal files remain with City Court unless a district proceeding opens a separate Lane County record. A state docket search will never surface a federal case, and PACER will never surface a city citation.
Federal copies play by federal rules. The Lane County clerk's fee schedule does not apply. PACER is the official public federal docket system, while a document pulled from CourtListener RECAP is only a convenience copy. Confirm any federal filing with the court that keeps the original record.
Lane County Federal Record Portals
The U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas is the federal starting point.

Federal cases route to PACER and CM/ECF rather than Kansas CaseSearch. The District of Kansas CM/ECF system is the federal filing environment where those court records live.

That separate login is the point: federal files never merge into the Lane County state record. PACER provides the federal docket search along with its pricing details.

For federal dockets, PACER is the word of record; check any free RECAP copy against it. Bankruptcy filings go through the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Kansas.

That separate federal layer does not share the Lane County events index.
